Nyonya Meneer




Nyonya Meneer is of Chinese descent who was born in Sidoarjo in 1895. She was born as Lauw Ping Nio. Its derived from the name of Menir rice . Due to the influence of the Dutch language, the word Menir finally written into " Meneer ".

Nyonya Meneer has a husband who came from Surabaya named Ong Bian Wan . After marriage they moved to Semarang, Central Java. At the beginning of the 20th century, Nyonya Meneer husband fell ill. Then Nyonya Meneer makes a jamu, and is able to recover her beloved husband.

Slowly but surely , jamu has become a popular and spread to other cities around Semarang.
Finally , in 1919, her family supports the establishment of a business called " Jamu Cap Potret Nyonya Meneer" in Semarang and continues to grow. Jamu Nyonya Meneer start reaching the market in Jakarta in 1940. 

Entering 1970, the competition in the jamu industry starting tight. Two companies that are competitors for Jamu Nyonya Meneer  are PT. Sido Muncul and PT. Air Mancur.


Nyonya Meneer died in 1978. Operational of the company then forwarded by the third generation of Nyonya Meneer.

On January 18, 1984 , established Museum Jamu Nyonya Meneer in Semarang who became the first jamu museum in Indonesia. This museum save various collections of cultural objects of jamu and private collections such as the history of Nyonya Meneer way of making jamu by using traditional tools, such as lumpang, alu, pepesan, cuwo, panel, and bothekan.

Now, PT. Nyonya Meneer become a national icon jamu industry in Indonesia is the largest and oldest. The company has also expanded into the international market by exporting to several countries. In 2006, PT Nyonya Meneer was successfully market to Taiwan after successfully entering Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Australia, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and United States.
